The architecture of this building is quite impressive, as is the craftsmanship which lies inside. It is a massive complex of six buildings totaling more than 33 rooms and 800 tatami. It also is famous for the nightingale floor which was used as a archaic alarm mechanism.
Nijo-jo was built in the early 1600's as a residence for Tokugawa shoguns. It was completed by the third Tokugawa Shogun, Iemitsu, after Fushimi-Momoyama Castle became obsolete. It was also the place where the bakufu, ironically, met its end. Although the castle's main structures (tenshu, for example) are now gone, there remains a great deal to see including Ninomaru-goten, Honmaru-goten, Seiryu-en, and original bases & moats.
